Otago is one of the largest geographic regions in Aotearoa New Zealand, with 31,000km2 of diverse landscape and stunning features, from the Southern Alps to the coast.

ORC is responsible for managing Otago’s natural resources on behalf of the community. The Council’s vision is that our environment and communities are healthy and connected ki uta ki tai (from the mountains to the sea).

We work closely with the five territorial councils in the region, key industry and community organisations to find the best approach to the challenges and opportunities facing Otago in the future.

Regional Councils

Regional Councils promote the sustainable development and enhancement of natural and physical resources for the benefit of present and future generations, including:

  • Managing freshwater, land, air and coastal waters
  • Regional emergency management and civil defence preparedness
  • Regional land transport planning and contracting passenger services
  • Harbour navigation and safety, oil spills and other marine pollution

City and District Councils

City and District Councils meet the daily needs of the community including:

  • managing roading
  • providing reticulated water and public amenities
  • disposing of waste and sewage
  • overseeing land subdivisions and building developments
  • providing community facilities such as libraries, art galleries and recreation facilities
