Gretchen is a seventh-generation Otago resident. Like all Otago people, she shares a deep pride in our outstandingly diverse region and environment.
Gretchen’s academic background includes an Honours degree in Ecology (freshwater). This foundation has supported her career in science, community-led catchment management and governance, spanning over 25 years. Her work as a Freshwater and Coastal Scientist and her involvement in Integrated Catchment Management (ICM) have equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of resource management. As a Councillor, she has been a commissioner for multiple plan and consent hearings and has served as both Deputy Chair and Chair of the Otago Regional Council along with Science and Planning Committee chair positions. Gretchen is also the current Chair of the Otago Civil Defence and Emergency Management Joint Committee.
Gretchen’s career has been marked by her ability to integrate scientific knowledge with community engagement. Her efforts in pioneering ICM models within New Zealand have bridged the gap between science and community, fostering broad gains for all.
